Medical Clinic Coordinator '23-'24
I joined SHIP my sophomore year of college (2022), when the quarantine restrictions allowed students to return to school. Similar to many other freshmen and sophomores, I was excited to join clubs and connect with other UCI students. To be honest, I applied to SHIP on a whim, but I unexpectedly fell in love with our motto: “Healthcare is a Right, Not a Privilege!” As a result, I worked to advocate for our patients at Lestonnac Free Clinic (LFC) as SHIP’s medical clinic coordinator (2023-24) and an active research and development member (2023-24).
Sone of my favorite SHIP memories come from the Committee Olympics and LFC clinic shifts. I recall the Committee Olympics being my first step towards bonding with other SHIP members because I got to learn everyone’s unfiltered personalities beyond the usual seriousness. Then, through consistent clinic shifts, I formed relationships with LFC staff, SHIP members, and regular patients. I especially remember one patient who would recall my name and our conversations, which was a touching reminder of our contributions to providing continuous, compassionate care to underserved members of our community. Beyond the clinic, SHIP gave me some of my closest friendships, which I continue to cherish to this day! (shoutout to Natalie Thach, Amanda Fang, Musab Kazami, and Shayan Ahmad :)
Now, as a first year of medical school at Creighton University School of Medicine, I am able to reflect on how SHIP has shaped my medical journey. Though I am still exploring where my future in medicine will lead, my path will continue to be guided by SHIP’s motto as I strive to advocate for healthcare as a human right and contribute to a more equitable healthcare system!

I joined SHIP because the mission statement spoke to me, and I knew I wanted to help carry out the mission to provide free healthcare to everyone, regardless of their background. No one should be denied care due to their background or finances, and volunteering with SHIP gave me the opportunity to directly help people access care.
Some memorable moments included being able to care for patients who have not received medical care in years, hear their stories, meeting like-minded individuals who are some of my closest friends to this day, and mentor high school students.
Now, I am currently a MS3 at UCI School of Medicine, and hoping to continue volunteering at free clinics throughout my journey!

I joined SHIP because I wanted to be part of a community that cared as deeply about people as it did about medicine. Raised by my grandparents, I resonated with SHIP’s mission to provide compassionate healthcare to the underserved, especially those who need it who it the most in our community. I loved how SHIP not only practiced its mission, but also created a space for students to learn and grow as culturally-aware and empathetic future healthcare providers. Some of my favorite memories include volunteering in our clinic and meeting patients who reminded me why empathy matters in healthcare especially during the pandemic. As I reflect back, I am so grateful for my time in SHIP because it gave me lifelong friends and a support system who continue to inspire me. Now, I’m a PA student at the University of Southern California, where I continue to carry forward SHIP’s mission and values in my journey to become a patient-centered healthcare provider. SHIP played a huge role in shaping not only my professional path, but also the kind of clinician and patient advocate I aspire to be.

Initially, I joined SHIP because I had done a similar lane of volunteer work in high school, with the difference being that I served under resourced communities abroad. SHIP was my first exposure to local underserved communities, and I was heartbroken hearing the stories of our patients and their struggles. I once listened to one of our patients choke up telling me how he couldn’t receive the treatment he needed elsewhere, how his father silently passed away from Covid because they couldn’t afford a hospital bill, how he wanted to end it all sometimes because it felt like the world didn’t care. I remember blinking back tears—feeling so sorry for how little we could do and providing the few words of comfort that I had. He held every right to be angry at a broken healthcare system that failed him so miserably, yet he responded with such overflowing gratitude and thanked me for even just giving him the space to talk. There aren’t enough tears to cry for the amount of tragedy in our world and I only have my one heart that can break for those who have been neglected by our healthcare systems, but when I am with my SHIPmates who also believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege, we can act together and become a meaningful source of change. When asked “Why SHIP?”, this is my why.
Looking back on the endless hours we poured into safely re-opening our clinic doors during the chaos of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, I feel so beyond grateful to all my board and general members who worked tirelessly together to make it possible and so honored to have served so many patients across all our clinics. I also have so many fond memories of our fundraisers, from cutting countless onions (chem lab goggles on, no shame) stress-making pounds of salsa the night before a taco fundraiser to chit-chatting and joking around in between taco sales at our Ring Road stand the next day~ There are so many moments I cherish from my time in SHIP, but here are just a few more honorable mentions: writing silly little poems for my executive board members during our Valentine grams fundraiser and seeing their reactions, getting surprised with heartfelt graduation messages by my SHIPmates, and having fun with my SHIP friends at a bunch of events, socials, and meetings!
After graduating from UCI, I studied at Johns Hopkins for a master’s degree in nursing; I recently graduated and passed my licensure exam, and I’m now preparing to transition into practice! I hope our current SHIP members make the most of their time in SHIP and I wish all past, current, and future SHIPmates best of luck in their own journeys :)
