Committees

In addition to volunteering at Lestonnac Free Clinic, SHIP also has an on-campus club at the University of California, Irvine. To better serve our patient population and uphold our mission statement, we divide our undergraduate students into the following 5 committees.

The Community Outreach Committee is dedicated to deepening our impact through outreach opportunities like community service events and our Free Health Fairs, as well as publicizing Lestonnac Free Clinic both on and off campus. We are excited to interact with the community in various ways -- whether that's through service projects, educational events, or wellness-centered initiatives. Our goal is to foster connection, promote health, and make a meaningful difference in people's lives! This upcoming year, SHIP's Community Outreach Committee plans on interacting with the community in different facets, such as through our Health Fairs and health kits.

Finance and Fundraising

The Finance & Fundraising Committee is deeply intertwined with SHIP's mission statement as we work tirelessly to raise the funds necessary to make that belief a reality. Our fundraising efforts encompass a diverse range of activities, and every dollar we raise goes directly towards procuring essential supplies for the clinic and developing vital programs that enhance the care we provide to our patients. Our committee has hosted numerous events to raise money and support our community such as our Cha for Tea and Blaze Pizza Fundraisers, hygiene kit and quilt-making for our Health Fair, and hosting our sponsored Winter Point Competition. Knowing that our work directly contributes to ensuring access to healthcare for everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, is what drives us!

Research and Development

The Research and Development Committee works to better patient flow and patient education programs at Lestonnac Free Clinic. The committee works with our Principal Investigator to create public health studies to survey our patient population. This gathered information is given to other SHIP committees to develop their own programs -- and will also be presented to the UCI community through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) and other conferences. This year, we have presented two projects at the Southern California Conference for Undergraduate Research and UROP! Going forward, we hope to continue our collaborations with our Principal Investigator and Lestonnac Free Clinic to implement more research projects and present our work at conferences across the country!

Patient Education and Resources

The Patient Education and Resources Committee (PEAR) emphasizes and creates patient education material to help prevention of common medical and dental issues, such as hypertension, high blood pressure, and diabetes. To better serve our patients at Lestonnac Free Clinic, our members create Spanish phrase books, pamphlets, and other resources. The committee members also partner with the Community Outreach committee to accomplish similar goals and tasks.

Mentorship

Aligning with SHIP's mission statement of serving the underserved, SHIP's Mentorship Committee partners with local high schoolers so they can receive first-hand knowledge of both the college application process and resources for a general university. SHIP Mentors also introduce medicine to these high schoolers through hands-on medical workshops, on a bi-weekly basis, at these local title-one high schools. Most recently, SHIP Mentorship invited a group of twenty high school students to UCI's campus for a day, where they were able to sit through a Human Biology panel and receive a tour of UCI's campus and dorms.
